Mad Jack is a sci-fi fantasy webcomic by cartoonist Randy Holder. What drew me to Mad Jack and what I love about it is that it’s the kind of comic I used to seek out as a kid, either at hip comic shops or less reputable newsstands. Yeah I loved Spider-Man, X-Men and all the other PG-13 teeny-bopper comics of the day, sure…but I was also mad for forbidden stuff like Richard Corben’s Den, anything R. Crumb, Heavy Metal, Creepy, Eerie, 1984. Stuff you needed fake ID to read. Mad Jack is like something Heavy Metal would have serialized circa 1981, alongside Richard Corben and Mobius.

Just my luck, I had discovered the Mad Jack webcomic after artist Randy Holder put it on indefinite hiatus. Hiatus? Uh oh. How many comics go on “hiatus” and never really return? According to the Bureau of Unproven Statistics: 99%!!! So I stalked contacted Mr. Holder and asked if there was anything I could do to help out. Long story short, I’m now assisting on Mad Jack as the letterer and the comic has started updating again. Not that I “Saved” the comic or any bullcrap like that, cuz Randy was gonna bring it back anyway. And Mad Jack is too tough to die.

Below: here’s a video of me starting to letter a page of Mad Jack using Inkscape. So watch the video (or videos, since there are a series of them) and then go forth and read Mad Jack by Randy Holder…if you dare.
